SOROPTIMIST INTERNATIONAL against violence
2011-04-05
„Emotional intelligence against violence" was the implemented project of the Varna club of the Bulgarian Soroptimist union for the first quarter of the year. The topic was provoked by the currently very serious and very painful for the Bulgarian society problem of violence. Violence provoked by the rapid society changes, stressful environment and insufficient psychological education in the educational institutions. The project “Emotional Intelligence against violence” was directed to the young people, often victims or active participants in the violence process. The goal was raising awareness about emotional impulsiveness and loss of control and the subsequent actions like emotional violence and physical violence in the social and home environment and ways to oppose them. We believe that the struggle against violence is extremely important mission, which is in accordance with the long term policy of Soroptimist against violence over women.

The intelligence (the awareness ) about the essence and the trigger mechanisms of emotions, as well as the emotional control gives opportunity to youngsters to start controlling outbursts of anger and aggression and to adequately react when they recognize the signs of the negative emotional states in other people they interact with. It equips them with techniques to defend themselves and oppose in situations, when the loss of control over negative emotions leads to conflict and violence. The emotional intelligence is the basic prerequisite and first step to decreasing the acts of violence in social as well as domestic environment.
The project was executed with the support of Varna Municipality and included over 160 young people age 16 to 18 , divided into four groups. With a extremely high interest and very active participation the young people studied how to recognize the triggers of the negative emotional outbursts, their origin and mechanisms. They practiced anger control techniques, participated in role plays demonstrating the difficult to detect symptoms of emotional violence at home and in school. It was interesting to observe how children victims of home violence start to realize that they do have a choice and that detecting and voicing the problem, sharing it with the proper people is the first step to overcoming it. The workshops were dynamic, interactive and provoked creative thinking and active approach to the problem.
The topics of the workshops - „Me and my emotions – self awareness and anger control”; „ Me and emotional violence”; „ Home violence and society ” were excellent start of a process of self awareness and self control in the developing young people included in the project.
The team of leading management trainers – Marionela Bojkova, holder of the annual award of the Bulgarian Human Resource Management and Development Association and Polina Metodieva leading market developer wit extensive lecturing experience received the sincere gratitude and respect of the young people and the teachers included in the project.
After each workshop the discussion would continue for long time, students sharing personal experience, attempts to cope with the problem and they wanted to learn more and more. They wanted to know where to read more and if it is possible to be included in other similar projects. Very vivid evidence for the effectiveness of the project was a sincere reaction of one of the students „ Please, include my mother in this project, teach her what you teach us now.” From the teacher’s team came as suggestion to initiate a project Emotional Intelligence to be organized for the teachers teams (mainly women), that work in difficult material conditions and highly stressful environment.
During the project execution Varna Municipality cooperated actively for the popularization of the project, publishing information on their web site, including detailed information, pictures and positive comments. The club received gratitude letters from the included in the project schools, showing the high effect of the project and stating desire for participation in similar projects in the future.
The members of Varna Club consider this pilot project “Emotional intelligence against violence” as very successful. We think that we have pulped a very critical and painful problem in Bulgarian society and we will continue fighting the unacceptable social acts of violence over young people and women, behind the walls of the home and the school institutions.
